“If she loves you Michael,” said Alice touching his face, “She’ll be back.”

“And if I love her?” asked Michael looking down at her.

“Then you’ll find her again,” said Alice smiling at him.

Mike bent down and kissed Alice on the cheek. “You know for someone so young, you’re wiser than all of us.”

“I know,” said Alice walking around the desk and sitting down again, “I’m also good looking, funny, and a fast typist in town to boot.”

Mike smiled as he nodded his head. “That you are, Ms. Hayden. That you are.” Her comment about being fast suddenly reminded him of the speeding ticket in his pants pocket. “Oh, Jesus. What time is it?”

“According to my desktop clock,” said Alice moving her chair closer to the desk. “It’s almost one and time for lunch. Give me a minute and I’ll join you. Remember you promised to tell me about the party.”

“Well, ah, Alice,” Mike said trying to sound like he was trying to get out of it, “I’d like too, but I have to go downtown on my lunch hour.”

“Well, Michael Lane,” Alice said sounding upset, “if you don’t want to tell me about the party, just say so. You don’t have to lie.”

“No, honestly, Alice,” said Mike reaching into his pocket and showing her what was left of his traffic ticket. “See, I’m not lying. I got a speeding ticket two days ago and I have to get downtown to pay it.”

Looking at the little piece of paper Michael was holding in his hand, Alice began to laugh. “What happened to that?” she asked.

“I sort of forgot it was in my pants pocket when I did the laundry,” Mike said putting it in his shirt pocket. “This was all that was left after the dryer finished with it.”

By now Alice was laughing so hard, there were tears in her eyes. “I’m sorry Michael,” she said trying to wipe the tears off her face. “I believe you. I believe you. Alright, you can tell me about the party later.”

“It’s a date,” Mike said turning to go back to the warehouse. “If anyone needs me, I’ll be back in about an hour.”

Picking up his tool roll, Mike walked out the back door and moved towards his car. The courthouse wasn’t more than twenty minutes away, so he knew he had plenty of time to get there and back. With luck he could get the ticket resolved and be back before Mr. Cory even knew he was gone.
